Our Attitudes

While we do not object to provision for access in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, nor to the capping of the landfill for polution prevention, we do find serious fault with the rest of the stated development plans. Here are our opinions on these matters:

  1. We believe that changes planned to this park will infringe on the rights of those who have used it for over ten years.
  2. We object to plans to take away the traditional off-leash area, which has always been most of the area (over 100 acres) shown on the map above, and restrict off-leash activities to a seven acre fenced pen.
  3. We believe that the free movement and interaction of off-leash activities are necessary to good physical and mental health of our dogs.
  4. We believe that turning the once wild areas into "irrigated play meadows" will effectively eliminate the traditional wildlife population of the traditionally wild grasslands and woods of this park.
  5. We believe that the efforts of responsible dog owners can and will prevent nuisance impact on non-dog owners using this park, just as is the case in Point Isabel Park.
  6. We believe that the needs of park users who wish to avoid contact with dogs, have picnics, and engage in sports activities requiring open areas are and will be better served by the Marina Park, about a mile south of Oyster Bay.
  7. We believe that expenditures to landscape and irrigate manicured lawns will be wasted money and effort.

Therefore, we find these plans unacceptable.

The EBRPD has been less than fully open in communicating their plans to the park using community. They have seemed not to welcome our comments or be willing to reconsider their plans in light of the realities of park usage. And they persist in acting as though the current development plans will provide the best service to the park users of the present and the future.

We dispute all of these matters.
